Venepuncture

A structured guide to performing venepuncture safely and effectively.

1. Introduction

Venepuncture is a core clinical procedure used to obtain venous blood samples for laboratory analysis. Good preparation, clear communication and correct sample handling reduce complications and repeat attempts.

2. Preparation

Confirm the clinical indication, identify the patient correctly, check for allergies including latex and chlorhexidine where relevant, explain the procedure and gain consent. Assemble equipment before starting. Perform hand hygiene and wear appropriate personal protective equipment.

3. Procedure

Apply the tourniquet, inspect and palpate for a suitable vein, clean the skin and allow it to dry fully. Anchor the vein, insert the needle bevel up at a shallow angle and collect the required blood samples in the correct order of draw. Release the tourniquet once blood flow is established or before needle removal, withdraw the needle safely and apply pressure with gauze.

4. Aftercare and sample handling

Label bottles at the bedside immediately after the procedure according to local policy. Check haemostasis, apply a dressing, dispose of sharps safely and ensure the patient is comfortable. Complete request forms accurately and send samples promptly.
